About Our Background Checks
Decatur Makers requires all applicants, aged 18+, to undergo criminal background checks conducted by a third-party service called Checkr. Having a criminal record does not automatically disqualify someone from membership. The nature of the offense, its severity, and the time since conviction or completion of the sentence are factors considered. The Decatur Makers Executive Board and staff have access to the background check results. If any concerning charges or convictions are found, applicants have an opportunity to provide information for clarification or mitigation. If membership is declined, the application fee will be refunded. The background screening process is approved by the board and complies with legal advice. There are no alternatives, and membership cannot be granted without completing the background check process. If applicants wish to disclose potential results in advance, they can email info@decaturmakers.org.
Please click here to learn more about Checkr and their process.
