What is Decatur Makers?
Decatur Makers is a membership-based makerspace in downtown Decatur, GA that welcomes a diverse group of makers of all ages, all skill sets, and supports a broad variety of interests from woodworking to welding, and electronics to embroidery. Join us to find your passion, further develop your skills, or support your small business idea!
What is a makerspace?
A makerspace is a place where people share space, equipment, tools, and materials, and their expertise to help each other build, repair, customize, understand, and otherwise MAKE things. Fire-breathing robot? Sure. Hook your toaster up to the internet? Absolutely. Crochet custom socks for your dog? Do it.
What are your hours?
Decatur Makers is open 24/7 to members who pay a monthly fee. Non-members can visit during our Open Build Night, Wednesdays from 7-9pm, except the first Wednesday of each month, which we reserve for our monthly members meeting.
What equipment do you have at Decatur Makers?
We have several broad areas including a wood shop, electronics shop, metal shop, textiles area, arts & crafts, and 3D printing. We have a growing list of equipment and tools including a SawStop table saw, 25” Woodmaster planer, jointer, band saw, drill presses, router table, 42”x52” Joe’s CNC milling machine, Glowforge Pro laser cutter and engraver, several 3D printers including resin-based printing, HAM radio gear, soldering workstations, oscilloscopes, AC and DC power supplies, MIG and TIG welders, metal lathe, metal band saw, gel electrophoresis, thermocycler, incubator, silk screens, and lots and lots of materials: scrap wood, metal, electronics components (too many to count!).
Do you admit all members?
All makers are welcome at Decatur Makers. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, in any of our activities or operations. We are committed to providing a welcoming, supportive environment for all members of our community. We are a supportive, wonderfully diverse group – just click the join button. We do run a criminal background check, which is covered as part of your membership application fee.
Can I join for just a month so I can work on a quick project?
We hope you’ll stay longer, but we do offer month-to-month memberships. If you pay for a year in advance there’s a 10% discount!
What are your storage options?
We have a dedicated drying rack for those times when a project can not be transported, but for the most part members take their projects home with them. To request space for larger projects contact the Executive Director or Makerspace Manager.
Can I donate used tools or materials?
Please ask before making a donation of stuff to Decatur Makers – we barely have enough room for the things we already have, so we need to be picky about things we accept as donations. If it’s something we need we will happily write you a receipt for your tax-deductible donation.
How old do members have to be?
We welcome makers of all ages, and kids as young as 11 years old can become members! Kids under 14 must have a supervising adult (not Decatur Makers staff) with them at all times. Kids 14-17 may be in the space alone with a caregiver’s permission. Young kids might enjoy our Family Build Nights – the last Wednesday of each month from 5 to 7 pm.
Can I bring my school class/homeschool group for a field trip?
We do host Outreach programming with K12 aged students and teachers. Contact the Executive Director or Makerspace Manager with your request.
I need some work done - can your members do it for money?
We’d much rather show you how to do it yourself, or invite you to do your project together as a member! Our members are extremely generous with their expertise and can help you learn how to make your own stuff!
