Youth Outreach Programs
At Decatur Makers, we believe in breaking down barriers and opening doors for all young makers. Through hands-on learning and inclusive programming, our youth outreach programs provide tools and opportunities to empower the next generation. Our work focuses on fostering creativity, critical thinking, and community engagement through three key areas:
Collaborations with Youth-Serving Organizations
Our outreach efforts include partnerships with youth-serving organizations that provide essential resources for underrepresented youth. Through collaborations with groups like the Decatur Housing Authority (DHA), International Rescue Committee (IRC), and Washington Street Community Center in Covington, we bring hands-on STEAM activities and mentorship to after-school programs. These partnerships, along with others, help us reach young people in meaningful ways, expanding their access to creative learning and supportive community networks.
Partnerships with Georgia Tech on AI Ethics and Futures
In collaboration with Georgia Tech research teams, we offer programs introducing young minds to ethical and critical AI literacy. Through initiatives like the Futures AI Project, children ages 10-12 are guided in using AI tools to create visual narratives, helping them express their hopes and concerns for local issues in Atlanta. Additionally, our work with Dr. Noura Howell includes workshops on Emotion AI, providing free training to middle school educators and youth on critical AI literacy and design futuring—skills crucial for engaging with emerging technologies thoughtfully and responsibly.
Community Event Engagement
Decatur Makers is a proud participant in various community events, sharing our mission with a broader audience. We join events such as the National Night Out, Emory Ideas Festival, Decatur Book Festival, Back-to-School Bash, Decatur Arts Festival, and more, offering interactive demonstrations and workshops to spark curiosity and connect with families in our community.
