Over the past six months we’ve had a lot of success raising money for things like putting on a new roof and getting the space properly air conditioned. We have exceeded our initial $50,000 fundraising goal and we’re thankful for having such a supportive community. We still have a long way to go to finish the first phase of our repairs to the building and equipping the space with the tools and educational materials to become a viable makerspace. We’re in the middle of preparing a Kickstarter campaign to raise another $15k (or more) that will allow us to accomplish our next goals.
Kickstarter is a “crowd-funding” website where people from around the world can contribute to your cause. Some of the projects that we’re adding to the Kickstarter include making an opening in the exterior wall to allow large projects and adding an RFID entry and tool activation system. We’re also hoping that these funds will help us purchase a SawStop, a CNC machine, a server and an audio/video system. Some of the rewards for participating (giving money) in our campaign include getting hand made thank you cards from some of our young members, limited edition Decatur Makers t-shirts and free classes. For large contributions we have some cool rewards, but you’ll have to wait until we announce the Kickstarter!
Once again, we’ll need your help. The success of a Kickstarter campaign depends on a large number of people getting involved and telling their friends and family about the campaign and inviting them to participate. Sharing the campaign socially through sites like Facebook and Twitter is very important – the more people see it the better. We’ll also have a letter that you can email to scout groups, craft clubs or programming meetups where you think possible Decatur Makers’ supporters may be active. Keep your eyes and ears open for ways to help us make this a huge success.
More information will be available shortly once the Kickstarter is live, but for now here is a summary of what we’re aiming for: Our initial goal is to raise $15,000 in 30 days. Our stretch goal to raise an additional $15,000 would help us get even further towards finishing the projects above. If we’re super successful we have an additional, $20,000 stretch goal just for putting in a metal shop.
Will you help?
We would love to know if you’re thinking about giving once the campaign is announced in October. If you’re willing to help us please take a moment to complete the poll below. This will help us get an idea where we stand.
