Meet Kayla Simms, one of Decatur Makers’ Maker Scholars. Kayla is a regular at our Middle School Girls Makers Sunday meetings. They meet the first Sunday of each month – check out our events page to find when the next one is! Kayla describes one of her favorite creations below…
“This is my wooden string art. I made this a Decatur Makers Girls Makers Day. This is a fun event that has middle school girls to come in and make. First, I painted my piece of wood and chose a stencil to use. Then, I taped the stencil on the wood and hammered in a lot of nails to the outside of the letters and shapes so I can have an outline of what it would look like. After all of the nailing, I took off the paper stencil and started to string the string on the nails, trying to make it look like the letter as best as possible. When finished stringing the nails, YOU ARE DONE. It was very fun to make this. I can’t wait for the next Makers Girls Club day.”
